I love a good dupe. Nothing pleases me more than finding a lipstick, outfit or nail varnish that could pass for something twice the price. It’s nice to treat yo’ self, especially when it comes to beauty, but when the high street brings out some excellent dupes it’s not always necessary. Read on to see if I found a dupe for ‘mint candy apple’, the cult essie nail varnish.
Rimmel Moisture Renew Lipstick Dark Night Waterloops
I had heard good things about the new Rimmel Moisture Renew lipsticks and when I saw ‘Dark Night Waterl-oops!’ I knew I had to have it: a dark wine / purple creamy lipstick that is perfect for this cold, miserable weather. It’s apparently a fairly good dupe for MAC’s ‘Rebel’… I do love a good dupe!
Kiko Electric Blue 336 Review
*clears throat* Attention everyone! Call off the wedding! Sorry Aaron, but I have a new love and it is called ‘Electric Blue (336)’ – not the best name, I know.
And before anyone says anything, YES this is a blue polish and YES I love it. I KNOW, no one is more surprised than me. Down is up! Left is right! I love a blue nail polish!! In case you’re new to these parts, I don’t do blue nail varnish. I just don’t really get the appeal. Or should I say didn’t. Until now.
I have wanted this polish ever since I heard it was the perfect dupe for Nails Inc’s ‘Baker Street’. Even as a non-blue fan, I still cant resist a good dupe! It is a vibrant, cobalt blue that just seems to glow. This only needed 2 thin coats and was so shiny I almost didn’t top with Seche Vite (but obviously I did – it’s like a compulsion).
Is this polish the turning point in my relationship with blue polish? Would I love Baker Street even more? I am so confused!
You can buy this (and why wouldn’t you?!) HERE.
Seventeen Potion Nail Varnish
I actually bought this polish ages ago but I took so long to get round to swatching it that I forgot just how pretty it looked. I think I first picked it up hoping that it was a (much, much more affordable) Chanel ‘Peridot’ dupe.
Collection 2000 ‘Look At Me’
This is polish number 4 from my Collection 2000 competition win. And it is the one I was most excited about trying.
Max Factor Fantasy Fire
I bought this polish absolutely ages ago but haven’t had a chance to swatch it. And I wish I hadn’t waited so long!
This is a famous dupe for Clarins 230 and it is beautiful. It’s a super sheer indigo jelly polish with really fine multichrome glitter that catches the light. In different light it shimmers pink, gold, green, orange…GORGEOUS. This polish is so vibrant and bright, it’s even more beautiful than the swatches show. It actually reminds me of the glittery glaze that Krispy Kreme put on their doughnuts!
The only downside to this polish is the size: 4.5ml! Which is teeny tiny. And to get up to full coverage this took 4 coats. FOUR. So now ¼ of the polish is gone after one manicure…less than ideal. I think it’s designed to be a layering polish, but most people won’t know that unless they’ve read a review first which I think it a bit crap. If it’s designed for layering then it should be marketed as a top coat. I will definitely only be using it for layering from now on even though I LOVE the way this polish looks by itself.
(Feb ’16 EDIT: It looks like Max Factor has reissued ‘this’ polish. I say that with inverted commas as from the reviews I’ve heard it’s a very different shade. You can get it HERE)
Yes! You heard me! Revlon Whimsical nail varnish now sits proudly on my display rack. And it…is…so…PRETTY!! Along with everyone else, I adored Deborah Lippman’s Glitter In The Air (or GITA as people affectionately nicknamed it) so I was thrilled when Revlon brought out this amazing dupe. I don’t own GITA, but you can see swatched all over the internet so you can compare if you like.
However, as with all good dupes, it soon became as hard to locate as the original! I searched all over the UK (that is not an exaggeration!) but no luck. So I resorted to eBay. I’m so glad I did as it is stunning.
It’s a sheer baby blue polish with: large baby pink and baby blue hexagonal glitter, smaller silver hexagonal glitter and teeny tiny baby glue circular glitter. I layered this over 17’s ‘Chaperone’ which is a light grey and it looks amazing. I only needed one coat of Whimsical for this coverage, but did have to use the brush to arrange some of the larger glitter as it had a tendency to drag.
I love the way the glitter layers though: smaller hexagonals on top of the larger one, the tiny glitter glowing through the sheer blue polish. ARGH SO PRETTY!
And as if it couldn’t get any better, after a day or two of wear, I added a matte top coat (GOSH’s one) and it looked even more amazing. A bit more sophisticated than the glitter (don’t get me wrong, I love glitter but it can sometimes look a bit ‘young’) and the glitter still shines but in a different way. Love it.
If you can get your hands on this polish you will not regret it. I adore it. This nail varnish is now discontinued *sobs* but you can see Revlon’s current glitter range HERE.
