FRIDAY FAVES: Dystopian Futures, Riot Grrrls, & Stories

Welcome to another edition of Friday Faves! It’s such a cliché but seriously, how the hell is it June? I am completely baffled and officially request that 2017 sl0ws down! What have you been up to this week? Tell me your Good Week/Bad Week tales!

Friday Faves: dystopian futures, riot grrrls and instagram stories

GOOD WEEK: On Monday it was a bank holiday, so we went on a little road trip with our friends Beccy and Joe. We went to a little country pub in Cobham in Kent and it was so lovely. It only took about 30 minutes to get there from London but we were all of a sudden in the middle of gorgeous countryside – it still surprises me that we’re so close to places like that. Plus, the little unassuming country pub (where Charles Dickens used to hang out apparently!) had SO many gluten free options, including the delicious fish and chips that I had. Amazing!

BAD WEEK: The hot weather this week has been both lovely and awful. Any extremes of temperature are guaranteed to mess with my rosacea. I’ve managed to escape relatively unscathed in comparison to previous years, but the constant worry of a flare up is really exhausting. We ended up buying a fan for the bedroom because I was just lying there feeling my skin get warmer and getting more frustrated. If you have rosacea, how is your skin coping with the heat at the moment? Or if you’re outside the UK, how do you get on with it? I’ve been using all the tips in this post to help me get through!

Friday Faves: Looking for a Netflix recommendation? Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On is a brilliant and thought provoking series

Another TV series for you to binge in one day and then feel sad afterwards. That’s basically my brand. This one is Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On. The film version came first and it’s as depressing as it is eye-opening: produced by Rashida Jones, it’s a look at the porn industry following 18/19 year old newcomers. The six-part Netflix series follows a similar line but opens the scope, looking at all aspects of how porn is produced and consumed. The episodes cover female-forward (or feminist) porn, app-based dating (which features probably the worst man you would ever want to meet), cam girls who run their own business, racism, as well as technology and consent. Be prepared for episode 5 because, if you’re anything like me, you will cry EVERYWHERE. You have been warned.

Friday Faves: I'm a sucker for a dystopian future novel!

This week I read The Giver by Lois Lowry and absolutely loved it. I can’t believe I’d never heard of it, because after I finished it I did some researched and found out that it had caused a lot of uproar back in the early 90s: schools banned it, people debated it endlessly, and she even had death threats! It’s a young adult dystopian future novel (I can’t get enough!) and was apparently made into a film a few years ago so I might seek that out this weekend.

I’ve really been enjoying doing (and watching) Instagram Stories so had to include it in my Friday Faves. They’ve totally ripped off Snapchat but I much prefer it and have been using it to show more of the ‘behind the scenes’ of my instagram. If you’d like to see the make-up-free-top-knot-rambling-about-nonsense side of me then follow along HERE. (If you don’t know what I’m talking about or don’t know how to view people’s stories then here’s a handy guide).

Friday Faves - my new podcast obsession, The Guilty Feminist

My podcast recommendation for this week is The Guilty Feminist – I asked on Instagram Stories for podcasts that you were loving and so many people recommended this and I can’t believe it took me so long to get on board. It’s funny, intelligent, and I spend a lot of time nodding or chatting along with them!

And lastly here’s some music to get your weekend off to a good start: my riot grrrl playlist. If you love female-led, fun and fearless music then this will be right up your street.

As always I’d love to hear your Friday Faves recommendations – TV, film, music, books (I have hundreds of books on my to-read list but always want more!), beauty… if you love it, I want to hear about it! Take a look at my previous Friday Faves posts HERE.
