The Best Cleansers For Rosacea and Sensitive Skin

I have been writing about my rosacea for nearly 9 years and in that time I have spoken about hundreds of skincare products. Some were incredible, some were good but just not for me, some were overhyped, and a few were absolutely terrible. I’ve been sharing these reviews with you on here in various forms, but mainly my Skincare Shake Up posts. Understandably people feel a little lost when they see the sheer scale of skincare advice on this blog, and I often get the question ‘yes but which are the best cleansers for rosacea? Which are your favourites?’ So here you go…

(I have also written a post about ‘the best moisturisers for rosacea‘ if you are looking for more skincare tips).

DISCLAIMER: I am not a dermatologist, or a doctor, but I am a person who has lived with rosacea for 16 years and has learned a lot about it in that time. My blog is not a step-by-step manual for rosacea, it should be seen as more of a jumping off point: something to guide you and steer you in the right direction. You must always use common sense with regards to your skin type, tolerance levels, application etc.

I have rosacea type 1 which is mainly under control through trigger management, as well as stress management, and finding skincare like the below that works for me. If you have questions about rosacea in general, this post is the mothership, covering skincare, make up, triggers, lifestyle, psychological impact and everything else you can think of.

Products with a * next to them were PR samples, if there isn’t a * it means they were bought by me – my reviews are always honest, regardless of who bought them. THE BEST CLEANSERS FOR REMOVING MAKE UP

When I’m looking for a first cleanse product it needs to tick a few boxes. It must: break down make up quickly and easily; be removed from the skin quickly and easily; leave the skin feeling comfortable and hydrated; be suitable for my very sensitive eye area. The three products below tick all of those boxes, so I won’t bore you by repeating that for each one.

Pai Rosehip Cleansing Oil* – Pai are a favourite brand of mine: all of their products were born from the experiences and frustrations of the founder, Sarah, who developed reactive and intensely sensitive skin overnight. Some people are a little afraid of using oils on their skin, especially if they have oily or spot-prone skin, but this cleansing oil is so gentle and light. It comes in beautiful frosted glass packaging, which sounds like a frivolous thing to mention but just because skincare is designed for sensitive skin, doesn’t mean it can’t feel fancy!

I did whole post – including demonstration video – on this incredible cleansing oil, so you can see its make up removal wizardry in action HERE.

SVR Sensifine Cleansing Balm* – This is the product I will be taking with me on trips (when those happen again…): it’s a balm-in-oil formula that comes in a lightweight, squeezable aluminium tube so it’s not only recyclable but also great for travel. The website says it has a coconut oil scent, but to me it smells exactly like melted butter… and the product is so good even that smell doesn’t put me off! I wrote a full review of the cleansing balm and the other products in the range HERE.

Murad Prebiotic 4-in-1 Multicleanser* – If you prefer a gel textured cleanser, this one from Murad will be right up your street. It turns into a lovely oil on the skin and makes light work of even heavy make up. They recommend you use two pumps of the product, but I’ve definitely found I need a few more to help the product feel less ‘draggy’ on the skin – with 3-4 pumps it’s perfect.

THE BEST CLEANSERS – GENERAL

It’s not that these products *don’t* remove make up, but I just find the whole process much quicker if I use the above as a first cleanse, and the below as a second cleanse. If you’re not wearing make up, or you are just looking for a cleanser for your morning routine, this section will be of the most interest to you.

La Roche Posay Toleriane Dermo-Cleanser – I’ve been recommending this cleanser for as long as I can remember. It’s a staple in my skincare stash due to its light formula, soothing feel on the face, and the fact it can be removed with either water or reusable cotton pads, depending on how irritated your face is. This also makes it great for use on flights, or anywhere you don’t have access to water. Toleriane is the first skincare range to be given the Seal of Approval by Allergy UK.

Avene Tolerance Extreme Cleanser – Another repeat feature on my blog, this cleanser ticks a lot of the same boxes as the LRP one above, including the fact it can be removed with a cotton pad or just water. The strange cap is actually a well-designed feature to keep the product sterile! I wrote all about this range when it first launched (5 years ago!) – you can read my full review HERE.

CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser – Another very simple but effective cleanser that has achieved cult status. This cleanser contains ceramides as well as hyaluronic acid, and has been accepted by the National Eczema Society. If you’re concerned about your skin barrier and want to hydrate your skin at every stage of your skincare routine, this is a great place to start.
