How Do I Look? Gemma On Psoriasis

Welcome to another How Do I Look? interview! I am fascinated by skin, visible differences and how others view themselves. I have rosacea but I wanted to open the conversation about skin positivity and visible differences so I can cover (and educate myself about) many different topics. Every week I am going to be talking to an inspirational and interesting person in order to share their story and experiences to educate, help, and support others.

August is Psoriasis Action Month – the name changed from Psoriasis Awareness Month a few years ago and I LOVE it. I actually wrote a post about rejecting the word ‘awareness’ for this year’s Rosacea Awareness Month so maybe this is a sign of things to come for other conditions! I am so pleased to introduce you to the amazing Gemma Boak. I discovered her through Instagram (although weirdly we went to the same school and I was friends with her sister many moons ago… *starts humming ‘It’s A Small World After All’…) She is a former research scientist, with a speciality in Immunology, and a lifelong ‘Psoriasis warrior’. She blogs and podcasts about her psoriasis and gives amazing helpful, knowledgeable, but (most importantly) accessible information to her followers.

An interview with Gemma Boak about her psoriasis. We chat skin positivity, social media, and she shares her tips on how to minimise and calm flare ups. #talontedlex #psoriasistips #psoriasisadvice

How Do I Look? Amy on her Port Wine Stain

I hope you’ve been enjoying my new blog series, How Do I Look? For the past 6 years I have used this blog to talk about my rosacea but I wanted to open the conversation about skin positivity and visible differences so I can cover (and learn about) lots of different topics. Every week I am going to be talking to an inspirational and interesting person in order to share their story and experiences to educate, help, and support others.

Today’s interview is with Amy, who I first discovered when we appeared on Katie Piper’s Face to Face (although sadly we didn’t get to meet in person). She does so much to raise awareness of Port Wine Stain Birthmarks and her make up skills are unparalleled! I hope you enjoy this interview – if you do I would appreciate if you shared it with a friend or on social media. Anything you can do to help spread the skin positivity word is such a big help – after all we can’t change the way the world sees visible differences without being visible!

An interview with Amy about her Port Wine Stain. We chat skin positivity, birthmarks in the media, and the impact of skin differences on mental health. Amy shares her make up tips and advice. #talontedlex #birthmarktips #makeupadvice

How Do I Look? Natalie on Vitiligo

Welcome to the third instalment in my new blog series, How Do I Look? I have used this blog to write about rosacea for the past 6 years and I wanted to open the conversation about skin positivity and visible differences so I can cover (and learn about) lots of different topics. Every week I am going to be talking to an inspirational and interesting person to share their story and experiences to help and support others.

This week I spoke to the amazing Natalie who has had Vitiligo for most of her life – I absolutely love the work that Natalie does online (and in person) to support those with vitiligo and to spread awareness. She’s incredible.

How Do I Look? Michelle Elman (@scarrednotscared)

I am really excited to introduce my new blog series, How Do I Look? I have been blogging about rosacea for over 6 years and my passion for skin positivity (and the wider discussion around visible differences) is slowly breaking through to the mainstream conversation. I wanted to talk to exciting and interesting people, who are sharing their stories and experiences to help and inspire others.

We are starting with the fantastic and wise Michelle Elman. You may know her from the viral photo that sparked her Scarred Not Scared campaign, when she posted a photo of herself in a bikini with the title ‘People With Scars Can’t Wear Bikinis’. Michelle had 15 surgeries in the space of 20 years and shares beautiful and honest images along with advice that inspires her followers to embrace themselves, in every way. She is also a trained body confidence coach, so when I say she is wise… she is really wise!

Repin and click to read my interview with the amazing Michelle Elman (@scarrednotscared), the body confidence coach and body positive campaigner. She talks about body positivity, shares her tips for self love, and the media visibility of scars.
