You will all know by now that Essie are my favourite nail varnish brand. I love everything about them: the formula, the longevity, the colours. On top of this, I’m a sucker for anything limited edition. So the Essie Retro Revival 2017 collection was bound to catch my eye…
Last year, Essie released the first Retro Revival collection (you can read my review HERE) and it was insanely popular. The decision to bring back some of the most famous discontinued shades – including the cult shade ‘Starry Starry Night’ – was an ingenious one. So it’s no surprise that they’ve brought out another curated selection of polishes from the discontinued vault.
The Essie Retro Revival 2017 collection is apparently inspired by Las Vegas, where the brand launched in 1981. But I think it’s very well placed to be released just before Valentine’s Day as the colours in this collection are very pink-toned.
As usual I’ll go from light to dark, starting with ‘Pure Chiffon‘. When I saw this colour I thought I was going to hate it as these shimmery gold/nudes usually give me spam hands, but I really like this. The VNL is a little bothersome, but that would only really be an issue with long nails. This is three coats of polish with Seche Vite on top.
Next up is ‘Sweet Tart‘ which I think may be my favourite of the bunch. Lex and grey nail varnish, sitting in a tree… I know, I know. But this one is just so pretty with the pink shimmer that seems to glow on the nails. This was another three coater.
‘Flawless‘ is a pastel blush pink that is very pretty but doesn’t blow me away. I feel like these collections are a chance to bring back something that is missed in the current range, and this feels like something that could be picked up already. But it’s a lovely wearable shade so if you don’t have anything similar already, it’d make a great addition to your collection.
Another pretty-but-generic shade is ‘Chastity‘ – a bright bubblegum pink that I know I’ll wear a LOT in the summer. It’s a gorgeous creamy finish polish that only needed two coats. This is probably my second favourite in the range as it’s just so flattering on my skin tone.
‘Prima Bella‘ is exactly the kind of colour I think of when I heard about the Retro Revival collections: something that instantly makes you think of a certain point in time. There are so many colours and finishes that transport you to a period in beauty… and this frosty, shimmery pink is so 80s and I LOVE it. It’s not something I would have picked up on seeing it in the bottle, but on the nails I think it’s wonderful: so eye-catching and fun.
And last but not least we have ‘Bold Beauty‘: a classic vampy red. This is a juicy sheer colour that would look absolutely stunning on short nails as the jelly-like formula means that even with three coats, the VNL is still obvious on longer nails. But the colour is incredible – so chic and dramatic.
And that’s your lot! So which one is your favourite from the Essie Retro Revival 2017 collection? They are only available until the 14th of March, so if you have your eye on one (or all!) of them you need to move quickly… go, go, go!
