A Modern French Manicure

A Modern French Manicure

A Modern French Manicure

I haven’t done a French manicure in years. This look was really big for a while and I ‘wore’ them quite a lot back then but – and this is probably nail art sacrilege – I’m not a big fan. I occasionally like them on other people if they are done well – but so many that are see are painted on badly-made, shovel-like acrylics and it has kind of ruined them for me. STRONG FEELINGS, GUYS.

So I decided to try to change it up, to make it a bit different, a bit more ‘me’… and I love it! It has a kind of 80s vibe to it, probably because of the shape of the nails. It’s a classic reimagined into something unusual and fun.

The nail polishes I used for this manicure are pretty generic, but the Kiko white I used is great as it’s designed for French manicures, so has a really thin brush that’s almost like a striping brush. It made doing the cleans lines on this really easy. I highly recommend if you’re a French mani fan (and if you are, I hope I haven’t offended you!)

What are your thoughts on this updated French manicure?

Soap & Glory Archery and One Heck Of A Blot

Soap & Glory Archery and One Heck Of A Blot

Soap & Glory Archery and One Heck Of A Blot

I love Soap & Glory as a brand (their Breakfast Scrub will change your life, no hyperbole) but I had never tried their make up. And now I seriously feel like I’ve been missing out.

Archery is a double-ended eyebrow shaper. One end has a fine ink brush that you use for filling in brows and giving them a bit of colour, while the other end is a waxy pencil that tames brows and gives them a more dramatic colour change. On most days I just use the pen as it’s more subtle for work and I am thrilled with it. It looks natural and doesn’t budge all day. I got ‘Love Is Blonde’ which is a great match for me.

One Heck Of A Blot is a mattifying powder, which is apparently one powder for all skin tones. I apply it in the morning after I’ve applied all my other make up and – miraculously – my face is still intact at the end of the day. I reapply at lunch time if I need to, but on the whole it keeps me matte all day.

You can buy Archery HERE and One Heck Of A Blot HERE.

I am a total Soap & Glory make up convert!

Essie Chinchilly Nail Varnish

Essie Chinchilly Nail Varnish

Essie Chinchilly nail varnish has been on my wishlist for a while. I have a *thing* for grey polish. I don’t know what it is about it that I like so much: it’s classy but interesting, simple but eye-catching… if I’m feeling uninspired and stood staring at my collection, I will inevitably go for a grey.

And this is a really lovely grey. It’s almost lavender-toned in certain lights and looks soft (am I the only one who thinks that?). I’ve described greys as ‘dove grey’ before, but I think this is the truest representation of that description that I’ve seen.

This took two coats of polish and is topped with Seche Vite.

You can buy this classic polish HERE.

Essie Stylenomics Review

This vampy beauty is the namesake of the 2012 Essie ‘Stylenomics’ collection. It is a lovely dark green with a little hint of grey. It is interesting enough to make it look less goth-like, but dark enough to still be statement. In the bottle it looks slightly uninspiring but has been a nice change from the super dark reds I usually go for when I want something dramatic.

This was perfect coverage in 2 coats, and topped with Seche Vite.

You can buy it HERE. I’ve also reviewed Recessionista and Head Mistress from the Stylenomics collection, both of which are lovely.

Essie Lapis Of Luxury

Essie Lapis of Luxury

This beautiful polish has been on my wish list for a while and I finally bought it in my Dubai holiday haul. And I am not disappointed.

essie Lapis of Luxury is a cornflower blue that has a slight lilac tone to it that makes it really flattering and pretty. In the bottle it looks fairly boring and standard, but when on the nails it comes into its own.
